What is Lip Enhancement?

Here at AK Aesthetics, we are a clinic based in Liverpool Rodney Street and Birkdale Village offering a variety of beauty treatments to those who live in the UK, including some of the best lip fillers in Liverpool. Today we are going to focus on what we mean by lip enhancement, looking at what it is used for, how it works, and what you can expect from this treatment, including aftercare advice.

What is Lip Filler?

When we refer to lip fillers, it is a way of augmenting and enhancing the lips to increase their fullness, or to lift the corners of the mouth to offer a more structured look. It is a non-surgical treatment that involves injecting the skin with a gel made of hyaluronic acid, which is a natural substance found throughout the body that helps to increase volume. Many young women use this treatment, but it can be particularly useful for older women who may have noticed changes in their lip morphology due to the natural ageing process. It can help with loss of fullness and projection, increased upper lip length, flattening and widening of the Cupid’s bow, fine lines and overall loss of volume and definition.

How does Lip Enhancement Work?

The gel works by not only adding volume, but also enabling the practitioner to contour the lips as desired, so they appear more symmetrical and balanced. The process involves an assessment of the client’s natural lip shape to determine whether increased symmetry is possible, or if one lip may need more of the product than the other. Clients receive a topical anaesthetic prior to the application of the hyaluronic acid dermal fillers. This will take place as a series of small injections around the lip lines, taking between fifteen minutes to half an hour. There shouldn’t be any pain beyond the feel of pressure and a slight pinching feeling. There is no downtime needed, so you can carry on with your day as normal once complete.

What Can I Expect from Lip Augmentation?

The results from lip augmentation can be quite dramatic. If clients desire a less noticeable change, it’s also possible to get the treatment carried out in stages on different occasions to see a more subtle and gradual change in the appearance of the lips. As we use a natural chemical, it dissolves away over time, so if you would like to continue benefiting from fuller lips, you will need to obtain top-up treatments, usually within 6 months. It’s normal for the treatment site to be slightly swollen and red, which reduces within one or two days, but if there are any adverse reactions, it is possible to dissolve the filler immediately. You should also be aware that if you are prone to cold sores, this can aggravate this issue, and if you take aspirin or similar medication, you may experience more bruising and bleeding with the injections. Most people will only experience minor swelling and bruising, which can be easily covered with concealer and lipstick.
